Suwa Taisha Shrine in Nagano prefecture is one of the most historical and honored shrine in Japan. Actually, the shrine whose name is "Suwa shrine" are about 25,000 in Japan! Suwa Taisha Shrine is the head temple of them. It is said that it was built more than 1000 years ago.
You can experience solemn and silent atmosphere of typical Japanese shrine there.
Suwa Taisha Shrine consists of partial shrines at 4 places Hon-Miya, Mae-Miya, Aki-Miya and Haru-Miya. The reason which this is divided into 4 places is not clear, Historian are researching yet now. Here, pictures of Hon-Miya are shown.
This shrine is surrounded by trees. That's because nature worship was mainstream in Shinto of Japan and it applys for Suwa Taisha Srine. It has a solemn atmosphere.

Some Japanese wedding is held at shrine, and it's sometimes seemed at Suwa Taisha Shrine, too. You can see the ceremony from some separated place. In many cases, Bridegroom wears black kimono and bride wears white dress, so you can notice it.
There are many shops and restaurants. For example, Nure-Senbei (moist crackers) is unique and delicious.
You can access there by bus from Kamisuwa station.
